NES Classic Back In Stores

NES Classic Back In Stores

The NES Classic has returned to store shelves today after launching to strong sales before being subsequently discontinued. Just like the last run of the console, the NES Classic going to cost potential buyers $60 USD.

The NES Classic’s first run was in November of 2016, and like many of Nintendo’s physical products, it very quickly became unavailable. The re-launch of the NES Classic was heavily publicized, so there’s a good chance that this first round of restocks may be difficult for consumers to come across.

For those who haven’t been following closely, the NES Classic Edition is exactly what it sounds like; it’s a small version of the original Nintendo Entertainment System, built to be a simple plug-and-play console that players can use to replicate some of the magic of one of gaming’s most memorable periods. It comes with a controller, also built to mimic the classic NES, and it has 30 games built into it.

NES Classic Edition Discontinued

Users can play Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, Balloon Fight, Metroid, and more without needing to drop any more money. Unfortunately, the system cannot play other games for the original NES, although there is a strong modding community for the console. The cartridge slot on top of the system is just for show, in order for the system to properly mimic the original. For users who want to play their original NES games without resorting to an emulator, they’ll have to dust off a real NES.

The NES Classic was originally planned to cease production altogether after its first limited run but was brought back by popular demand. It’s unclear whether or not its return is a permanent one, or if Nintendo intends to shut down production again in the future.
