A little more than six months after its launch, the Nintendo Switch is receiving an admirable amount of third-party support, especially from big name publishers. However, the hotly anticipated release of FIFA 18 has been marred for certain players by some bizarre technical issues.
The Switch version of FIFA 18 isn’t exactly the same as the iterations released for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, as it’s missing the game’s story mode and has some graphical adjustments. It seems the latter has caused some strange glitches that players have been sharing online.
The first sees all the players on the pitch, the ball, and various other objects replaced by black boxes, seemingly replacing their 3D models with their hit-box information. It remains to be seen why the game isn’t able to properly render the textures as it would normally.
The second replaces the facial scans for certain players with a blue and green checkerboard. It’s being reported that this only affects certain teams, with the recently promoted Huddersfield Town being one such victim, but there’s currently no confirmation that this is the case.
For the Switch to be truly on the same level as the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 when it comes to third-party support, multiplatform titles need to perform just as well as they would on the other two systems. Most players would be able to look past the graphical tweaks necessary to allow the game to be played in handheld mode, but these errors seem to indicate that development was somewhat rushed.
Of course, this isn’t the worst thing about the Switch version of the game. Minor glitches like these are small potatoes compared to the fact that there’s no way to play online multiplayer against friends.
However, it’s worth remembering that it’s still early days for the Switch, and EA’s sports output typically has a shaky start on new hardware before improvements are made from there on out. Hopefully this is the case when it comes to FIFA 18.
FIFA 18 is available now for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
